Recording Media: Codex Compact Drives

The kit ships with two Codex Compact Drive 2TB units (CB16-2048), each offering 1920 GB usable capacity and write speeds up to 16 Gbps (~2000 MB/s) — well above what the ALEXA 35 requires.

Recording Capacity at 24 fps

  • ARRIRAW 4.6K OG: ~56 minutes per drive
  • Apple ProRes 4444 16:9 UHD: ~3.5 hours per drive

Offloading Footage

The Codex Compact Drive Dock (TB3) handles data transfer at up to 2.5 GB/s over Thunderbolt 3 (1.2 GB/s over Thunderbolt 2 with an adapter). It works on macOS and Windows without extra software, though Mac editors can install the free CODEX Device Manager to enable on-the-fly High Density Encoding of ARRIRAW footage during transfer.

Note: the dock only accepts Codex Compact Drives and requires a genuine Thunderbolt interface — USB-C-only hosts are not supported.

Audio Setup

The kit includes the ARRI ALEXA 35 / ALEXA Mini LF audio cable — a 1m cable with a 6-pin connector on the camera end and open leads on the other. The extra pin (compared to the 5-pin ALEXA Mini connector) delivers 12V auxiliary power for external pre-amps or audio receivers. This cable is not compatible with older ALEXA Mini cameras.

Setup Checklist for Production Teams

  1. Confirm Codex Compact Drive capacity against your shooting ratio and codec (ARRIRAW vs. ProRes)
  2. Bring a Thunderbolt 3 (or Thunderbolt 2 with adapter) laptop for on-set offload
  3. Mount the MVF-2 viewfinder and route the right-angle VF cables before rigging
  4. Attach the Production Support Set (top/side/bottom) before balancing on the dovetail
  5. Verify B-Mount battery compatibility ahead of your shoot day
